SOUTH DERBYSHIRE REPRESENTATIVES

MIDWAY WARD

 BILL DUNN

 Bill Dunn

I have been a councillor since 1969, serving initially on Swadlincote Urban District Council and, since local government re-organisation in 1974, on South Derbyshire District Council. I have been married to Marjorie since 1951. We were born and bred in mining villages in County Durham (Wingate and Wheatley Hill) and moved to Swadlincote in 1962 after the closure of Wingate Colliery. We have three sons and six grandchildren and we are proud to be part of South Derbyshire and Swadlincote. Over the years, I have been leader and deputy leader of the council. I have served on every committee and have chaired committees relating to housing, environment and planning. I am available on request - I find that the best advice surgeries are the pub, the corner shop and the library.

I have been a councillor in South Derbyshire for 28 years and a governor of the William Allit School for about 30 years and chair of governors for the past 17 years. I visit the school at least once a week and often much more. I have been involved with many of the appointments of staff and I know most of them personally. We have a very good governing body who work very hard to make sure the school stays in tip top order. I am a director of Sharpe's Museum Heritage Centre. I was a member from the beginning of this concept and am vice-chair of the board. This is a very exciting project and since its conception has grown by leaps and bounds. There are very good concerts in the kiln and many more things happening such as farmers' market, craft days and antique fairs. I am also a director on the board of Phoenix Afterschool and Holiday Club. This has been in existence for many years and I was one of those responsible for making it happen back in the 1980s. We take children from the age of four years to 14 years at the moment and we are hoping to be able to expand in the future. Phoenix is also a training centre for childcare. I also sit on the board of Relate and Age Concern.

I have been a councillor for six years and two years on the county council. I was originally a member of Friends of Newhall Park which made me realise that there was a lot to do in the community and led to me standing as a councillor. One of my biggest achievements was getting Alma Road resurfaced two years ago which has made a significant difference to the community. I serve on numerous local bodies as well as being chair of governors at Newhall Infants School.

I was elected to the council in 1997 and became deputy leader in 1999 plus chair in 1999/2000. I have held various positions within the council including being chair of the scrutiny committee which recommended a Clean Team was introduced but due to employment commitments at the time, I reduced my involvement to vice chair of housing and community services. I was instrumental in retaining council houses and became National Executive member of Association of Retained Council Housing. I was elected vice chair but when the Labour group lost control of the council in May, I was unable to take up the post. Prior to becoming a councillor, I was a full-time trade union official and NEC member.I am currently leader of the Labour group on the council.

Lakhvinder Pabla

Working together and winning together. This theme being at my heart, I have lived in this area for the past 20 years and represented Stenson Ward since 1999. I was re-elected in May 2007.  David Shepherd and I have worked hard to deliver the issues most important to local people. I will do my best to ensure that the policies of the council lead to enhancing the quality of life for all people regardless of gender, faith and disability. I will be working with the police to ensure that residents feel safer to live in this area. David and I are always ready to raise residents' concerns at the Safer Neighbourhood meetings and with the police. I want to ensure that in our community people of all ages and of different cultures live together and feel safe.

As a representative of Stenson Ward at Swadlincote, I believe that it is necessary to be easily contactable by residents. Not only do Lakhvinder Pabla and I hold monthly councillors' advice surgeries, we deliver regular newsletters giving councillors' reports and informing residents of matters affecting Stenson Ward. If you wish to contact me between surgeries, do not hesitate to telephone me. I am pleased that the Beat Officer, PC Paul Martin, attends the surgeries to advise and liaise with residents and that Mark Todd MP regularly joins Stenson Ward surgeries.

Joan Lane

I have lived in Swadlincote for the past 32 years having moved here from the West Midlands. I was first elected to Council in July 2006 in a by-election and then re-elected in May 2007. Making a positive contribution to the community that made me so welcome all those years ago and has continued to do so, is my priority. My husband is also a councillor for the Swadlincote ward and we have two sons. I have always taken a keen interest in education since my children first started school and have been a school governor for more than 20 years. I am Chair of Governors at both Church Gresley Infant and Nursery School and Springfield Junior School. Swadlincote and South Derbyshire continue to change and grow very quickly. It is crucial that we safeguard all the wonderful things about the area whilst carefully planning its future prosperity. Taking positive steps to maintain its position as one of the safest areas in the County and looking to improve leisure and community services are challenging areas in which I hope to be able to make a contribution. Finally, please don't hesitate to contact me if you think I could be of any help or assistance. I look forward to hearing from you.

I am pleased and feel privileged to be returned in 2007 as elected member for the Swadlincote Ward. I am a local person and for most of my life I have lived in the area. I spent four years away at Bangor University where I qualified as a teacher. I am currently teaching in Burton on Trent. I am 49 years old; I am married to Teresa and have a daughter at Nottingham Trent University. As a family we have benefited from the excellent schools, medical care and community facilities on offer in South Derbyshire. Crime and anti-social behaviour are unacceptable in any community and I would always encourage groups to form their own networks to combat this, in partnership with the Police. The fear of crime can in some cases be as disturbing as actual crime and it is a problem which needs to be addressed, forming local groups can be a way of allaying such fears. I would encourage all residents of Swadlincote to make your concerns known by attending the new Safer Neighbourhood meetings or the Swadlincote Area meetings, time and dates for which can be found on the Council's website. Swadlincote is expanding rapidly, it is booming in a way that has never been seen before. After the closure of the mines, councillors and officers have worked hard to create the opportunities which we are all benefiting from now. We must not be complacent there is always work to do to improve the quality of life in South Derbyshire and I relish the chance to continue to be a part of this.

WOODVILLE WARD

Steve Taylor

 Steve Taylor

I have been a councillor since 1995 and before the election this May, I was chair of environmental and development services. In that position, I was instrumental in making sure that an effective recycling scheme was introduced which will soon cover the whole of the district. In Woodville, we worked hard to set up the Woodville Surestart scheme which has been beneficial to the area. My priority now is to make sure that public services in the area keep up with the level of housing development here. I am chair of governors at Woodville Infants and governor at Woodville Juniors.

I have been a councillor at South Derbyshire for 13 years and at Derbyshire County Council for five. I find it very useful serving on both counties.  I was born and bred in Netherseal but have lived in Church Gresley for 35 years. I am a former miner, working at Donisthorpe for 27 years. I served for many years as Chair of the Regeneration Committee and would like to think that we have helped to regenerate South Derbyshire. My two daughters were born and bred in Gresley. DERBYSHIRE COUNCILLORS

 Linton and Church Gresley

Kath Lauro

Derbyshire councillor

I have been a county councillor for 14 years. I have always
interested in politics and when I moved from Derby to Rosliston over 30 years ago I met a chap who ran the local branch of Labour Party and then got involved as branch secretary as did my husband Mick. I was always Labour inclined , coming frpm Normanton which was a very poor part of Derby City. My mum was a single parent (which was not common in those days) and I use to stick up for the rights of minorities then. I joined the Co-op and learnt about the unions, Keir Hardy and all the history of the party and I later got involved with the mining communities in South Derbyshire. I went to university at 49 and gained a degree in sociology and psychology when I was 53. It was after that that I worked for Mark Todd for a few years. I left Mark when I was elected as chair of what was then one of four Improvement & Scrutiny committees. I moved recently to Chair of Children's Services and School Planning. This takes up most of my time.  But I am also a school governor at Castle Gresley Infant's School, on the management committee of the Newhall Inclusion Unit Safer Communities as well as the on the council of governors at Derby City Hospital.

One of my biggest achievements is lobbying the council to build a new purpose-built Residential Home (Castle Court) on abandoned educational land in the heart of Castle Gresley
Village.
