Mark Todd is the current Labour MP in South Derbyshire. He has
been in position for 11 years. Last September he announced his
retirement at the next General Election.
"The next election could be nearly three years away. I want to
give my party plenty of time to select a fresh candidate, and for
that person to start work in South Derbyshire .
"I decided that this should be my last term before the 2005
General Election. I have two main reasons for choosing to stand
down.
"First, if I were re-elected in 2008 or 2009 I would find myself
approaching 60 at the following election and with much less chance
to pursue other interests in my life, in business and in public and
voluntary service, which aren't compatible with being an MP.
"Secondly, I'd like to lead a slightly less chaotic life, and be
available to help my wife and teenage son on a more regular basis.
The hybrid existence of a South Derbyshire home and a London
presence through much of most weeks hasn't been easy for any of
us.
"South Derbyshire has changed rapidly over the last 10 years - a
growing population, increasing prosperity and new jobs. Public
services have also sharply improved - most of our schools have seen
major investment, we have far more police, there's a new health
centre in Swadlincote and a new hospital under construction in
Derby . Rapid growth and change have presented challenges, and I've
enjoyed my role in helping to find solutions. Above all I've
enjoyed the day-to-day task of hearing from residents, listening to
their views and trying to help them."
"There have been disappointments as well as successes, and every
day has produced new opportunities for me to learn and to help.
"The voters of South Derbyshire will have the chance to choose a
fresh face at the next election. While I've never been arrogant
enough to predict their choice, I'm sure they will reflect on the
improvements that most can see and experience, on the track record
of our new Prime Minister and his very different style of
government, and on the risks of change to a Tory alternative.
"I will, of course, continue to serve this area determinedly
until the next election. There is still much to be done - ensuring
the major investment in our secondary schools proceeds,
arguing for more flood defence investment, seeking further
improvements in our local public services, and
representing efficiently the day to day concerns of
constituents."
